Dante

The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri: Inferno, Purgatory, Paradise, translated by Henry F. Cary with complete notes and illustrated by Gustave Doré. New York: Crown Publishers, 1935.

Call number: PQ 4315 C4 1936 (Main Library)

Case 1: “The Divine Comedy Between Texts and Images”

This complete edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy featuring Henry Francis Cary’s translation includes the same illustrations by Doré as in the exhibited item, Dante’s Inferno (H.F. Cary). It also contains the same Life of Dante but does not feature the poet’s portrait, the table of contents, the list of illustrations, and the Chronological View of the Age of Dante. In Purgatorio and Paradiso, the majority of cantos have at least one illustration, but for some no image accompanies the text.
